6 Ways to Take Care of Yourself

Hello everyone! Here’s to another post up on Mindfully Miranda, eh? I just love sharing my health and wellness related experiences, knowledge and tips with all of you! There’s something so rewarding that comes from having my blog and knowing that people do actually read it, even if it’s just a handful! As long as I am reaching someone, somewhere I am content with hoping that maybe, just maybe, my blog has helped them along their journey at least a little bit!

Today, I thought I’d talk to you all about taking care of yourself, which is seemingly simple, but often overlooked. I always say that even though exercising and eating well are two major components of living healthily and happily, the spiritual aspect of this lifestyle is just as important! You need to take of your mind, body and soul in order for this lifestyle to be something you can commit to long-term. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life though, I know that it’s hard to maintain a ritual of taking time to slow down and take care of yourself. I for one, tend to get caught up in it all, so this post is not only helpful to all of you lovely blog-readers, but also a reminder to me to slow down and give myself some TLC!

6 Ways to Take Care of Yourself – #MindfullyMiranda style

Make a trip to the tub!  No, I am not implying that perhaps you are either smelly or unclean and in need of a good bath, but what I am implying that that maybe your spirit needs some cleansing (or your chakras, as my mum and I always say). Considering how busy we all are nowadays, it’s pretty safe to say that the majority of us opt for the quick convenience of a shower over a bath. Today, I challenge you to slow down for a second, carve out a solid 20-30 minutes of free time for yourself, an run a bath. If you work out often and tend to have sore muscles, have the water run a bit on the hot side, add 1 cup of epsom salts to the water along with a relaxing scented bubble bath such as Dr. Bronner’s (found here). Now, light some candles, turn on some soft music (I recommend Pachebel’s Cannon) and enjoy this quality time with yourself!

Paint your nails. Sometimes all that a girl needs to feel good about herself is a fresh new manicure! I’m someone who tends to scrub a lot of dishes (what can I say? I like to cook..) and my hands/nails tend to get a bit of a beating! Either way, a girl deserves to be pampered every once in awhile and a simple, quick way to do just that is an at home mani/pedi, so grab your fave colour and get to work! My mum picked up some gorgeous looking hand and feet mitts to assist with our at-home pamper day, and I can’t wait to try them!

Read a good book! Reading is something so important for the soul because it can really open up your perspective on the world. I love reading books that inspire, and my two favourites as of late have been “Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert” and “A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson”. A good book is also the perfect accompaniment to your bath! It’s so fun to browse bookstores, so I recommend taking a friend to a small, local one and picking up something that suits your fancy! Or on the contrary, if movies are more your style, grab a friend, family member or significant other and make a big bowl of popcorn, and sit down to one of the classic feel-good movies.

Make a cup of tea.. This is sadly one of the only things I get points for doing on a daily basis, but its a good start though, and there’s always room for improvement, right? Anyways, if you’re not a fan of tea, a cup of coffee works wonders as well because what we are going for here is the simple comfort and warmth that comes from a cup of caffeine (or herbal.. haha). Tea and coffee both have numerous health benefits, and this website has some great benefits listed if you’re interested in learning more! Again, these serve as lovely additions to your bath or book reading, but even so, just making yourself a cuppa and sitting out on your front stoop, at your kitchen table, etc. and taking the time to enjoy each sip is perfect! If you’re a fan of cream and sugar, make this your opportunity to treat yourself to some! I believe that when you treat yourself you should be aware and present in the moment, and this is perfect for that.

Take a look in the mirror.. One of the kindest things you can do for yourself is to look in the mirror and tell yourself that you are beautiful. The simple affirmation of saying “I love you, you are beautiful and you are worthy.” is so powerful. It’s important to love and appreciate yourself through every walk of your life, and acknowledge just how far you have come. Your self worth is not defined by how you look, how far you can run, whether or not you have a high GPA or IQ, the car you drive or anything of that sort. As long as you are being kind and simply trying, you are on the right track. You are beautiful regardless of your shape, size, colour or height, and you deserve to know and believe that. Just think about how much you have lived through to get you right up to this moment, it’s pretty damn remarkable. So look yourself in the eye and believe that you are deserving of your own love as a means of being more capable of spreading love to everyone else that you meet.

Meditate.. This can be simple or it can be challenging, but the most important part is that you try it at least once, and go from there. It can be hard to sit in silence for any length of time, so there are many variations to meditation and it is up to you to choose what suits you best (remember, your own version of a healthy, happy life?). My favourite way to meditate is to sit out on the grass, cross-legged and simply thank the Universe for each one of my blessing and for the abundance it has bestowed upon me. Any level of conscious awareness is considered meditation in my books, all you need to do is apply your own personality to it. Sometimes when its difficult for me to quiet my thoughts, I do a moving meditation by doing a simple yoga flow. You can try it for yourself, and if yoga isnt your thing, theres gardening, walking, baking/cooking, and practically anything else that allows you to connect to the energy around you and feel gratitude and peace.

Wishing you above all Health and Happiness
