Vancouver Rock n Roll 10K

Since today is Monday, and I’ve already posted my first installment of Mindful Mondays, I thought I would continue with the theme of being mindful and share with you something exciting and important that I have on the horizon!

On October 24th, I will be completing my first 10K run along the Seawall in Vancouver’s famous Stanley Park as a way of raising money for a local Charity.

Since this is primarily a food-related blog, I figured its appropriate to say that the only reason I became aware of this opportunity to incorporate something I love into a Volunteer effort to help those in my community, is because due to my love of cooking and baking (and my constant need of fresh fruits and veggies), I often find myself in the grocery store in need of supplies. When you grocery shop as frequently as I do, it is extremely important to pay close attention to the amount of money that you spend, and a local grocery store, Price Pro, has some of the most reasonable prices around.

A few months ago, I was speaking with one of the Administrators, and she encouraged me to sign up for the run, so here I am telling you all about it so you can learn about the great cause it supports!

Here is a little blurb from their website on what Price Pro stands for..

John Volken Foundation

The John Volken Foundation was established in 2001 by United Furniture Warehouse owner John Volken. In 2004, John sold United Furniture Warehouse and transferred virtually all of his assents in the foundation and devoted his efforts full-time to the Foundation’s charitable programs Lift the Children and the John Volken Academy. John’s humanitarian endeavors reach 7 countries. In 2014, John was honored with the Dalai Lama Humanitarian Award for Changing Lives.

John Volken Academy

The John Volken Academy is a long-term residential drug and alcohol treatment center for young men and women aged 18-34 that goes far beyond other treatment centers. Our residents overcome their addictions, as well as further their education, receive extensive career training, and gain all the tools they need for a happy and successful life of sobriety. There are currently three academies in Vancouver, Canada, Phoenix, Arizona and Seattle, Washington. The program’s affordability is at the heart of its purpose. Other than a relatively small one-time admittance fee, the entire costs of the 2-year+ program is paid for by the John Volken Foundation. This includes the students’ housing, food, job training, education, counseling, and more. Our mission is to be a world leader in providing the most effective and most affordable addiction recovery treatment teaching relevant life and job skills, instilling in each of our students the desire to always be the best that they can be for themselves, for their families, and for their community. Visit for more inforamatoin about the John Volken Academy.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know many of the individuals enrolled in the program, as they are extremely pleasant and helpful in the store, and it only seemed right that I take their stories of courage and strength and put the inspiration that it gives me towards something that matters. Seeing the transformations of the students has been a remarkable experience, and I am grateful to the JVA for saving their lives. I hope that you will all take a few minutes to look into The John Volken Academy, and perhaps in me sharing this with you all, you will be able to help in some way too, whether its referring someone to the program or making a donation.

As Mother Theresa says, we cannot all do great things, but we can all do small things with great love. For me, this run will be a small thing that I can do with great love, and I know that thinking of the amazing individuals I have met through the program will keep me going strong throughout those 10 kilometers.

If you are so able to, I would appreciate if you took a look at my Fundraising Page and perhaps make a donation – no matter how small it all adds up to make a difference. I have to raise at least $250 before the race, and am currently only at $130, so help in raising that extra $120 would really mean a lot to me.

Thank you for taking the time to read this very special post!

Wishing you above all Health & Happiness

I am so fortunate to have gotten to know so many of the students at JVA, as they are truly courageous individuals to seek out healing and help.
